For this kitchen remodel in Barrington, our clients were seeking a transitional style kitchen design that would be good for entertaining.
This kitchen was in desperate need of rework, and had great potential. While the footprint was a good size, the layout was closed off and cramped and not very conducive for this family.
They had a fair amount of cabinet space and a separate walk in pantry, but the kitchen felt small and closed off. By removing the built in pantry, we were able to lengthen the kitchen and get this family all the bells and whistles they could desire.
All our inspiration photos had a Scandinavian style to them, so we made that our starting point. We wanted to really maximize the potential of this beautiful kitchen. The cooktop wall features a patterned cement tile across the entire wall.
It’s complete with large drawers for pot and pan storage, pull outs for spices, and a beautiful drop in range top with stainless steel hood. The back wall features a stand out concrete apron sink, panel front dishwasher, floating wood shelves, and soft gold wall sconces.
Front and center is the lengthy island complete with a microwave drawer, beverage refrigerator, large storage drawers, waterfall edges, an illuminated shiplap back panel and seating for five.
Lastly, we couldn’t remove a pantry and not replace that storage with something even better. That was the concept for the full height pantry wall. While these are reduced in depth for proper clearances, these pantries hold everything and then some.
We love the contrast of light and dark elements paired with the warmth of the natural white oak floors and gold accents.
The kitchen appeared double in size after removing the wall for the built in pantry. It gave us much more length to work with, which would allow us to create a more functional work triangle and a nice big island.
Omitting some of the dark, heavy cabinets immediately brightened the space by allowing the light from the current windows to shine through. Additional can lights, pendant lights over the island and sconce lights over the window also helped to brighten the space, as well as, added some much needed personal flair and character.
We brought in new 4” white oak hardwood floors stained natural to keep the space feeling bright and natural. After completion of the floors, we set our new cabinets, and had our countertops fabricated. We completed the space with a mix of ceramic and cement backsplash tile and warm brass hardware.
