KITCHEN REMODELING IN PROSPECT HEIGHTS, IL
This kitchen remodel in Prospect Heights was designed for a young, growing family, who needed better flow of their colonial home. The existing footprint was pretty compartmentalized, making the kitchen kind dark and unwelcoming.
They also had a separate formal living room was completely closed off from the home and rarely used. The goal would be to open up the sight lines so their young kids could utilize the side yard and their parents could still keep a close watch. To do this, we had to open up a load bearing wall that currently divided the kitchen and the unused formal living room. We also had to add a sliding patio door out the side. This not only opened up sight lines, but also greatly improved the lighting and flow in the space.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS KITCHEN REMODEL OBJECTIVES
CREATE A LARGER KITCHEN
Create a larger, more functional, welcoming kitchen that included an island with seating, an oversized range, and plenty of storage
IMPROVE THE VIEW TO YARD
Open up walls and a sliding door to better utilize the side yard and formal living room. This busy mom wanted to be able to send her kids out to play in the side yard but still be able to work in the kitchen while keeping eyes on them.
BRIGHTEN UP THE KITCHEN
We wanted light and bright to flow through the Prospect Heights home, but also wanted the space to feel warm. This included adding in a fireplace in the new family room.
OPEN CONCEPT KITCHEN
Create a more open floor plan for everyday living with small kids and pets, and also a better flow when hosting gatherings. Adding a sliding patio door not only enhanced the space and usability on the inside but the outside, as well.
BEFORE THE PROSPECT HEIGHTS KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECT
The existing Prospect Heights home was very compartmentalized. The kitchen was closed off from the living room creating an unused area of the home. The side yard couldn’t be viewed from the kitchen or the current room that this family used as a family room.
By opening up a wall and adding a patio door, we were able to achieve not only an open concept and better flow, but also better utilize the side yard. Several support beams replaced load bearing walls, built in pantries were removed, windows were flipped, and an old brick wall was removed in preparation for a new range wall.
PROSPECT HEIGHT KITCHEN DESIGN CONCEPT
We wanted the new kitchen to feel very open and bright. We not only achieved this by adding windows, glass doors and can lighting, but also in our material selections. White cabinets were selected to keep the area bright and also be a good contrast on our wood floors. Silvered Gray stain by Minwax was selected to keep the area warm, soft and bright, and was a great compliment to our backsplash that included a lot of warm tones and texture.
